Madison Country Day School Hosts 1st Annual MCDS Jazz Showcase
 
Waunakee, WI  [10/26/09] – Madison Country Day School will be hosting both student and adult Jazz ensembles, as part of their MCDS Jazz Showcase on December 16, 2009.  Performing groups include featuring acts from the school's 5th & 6th grade beginning band, a 7th-12 Grade Jazz ensemble, and the event headliner: THE JEFF PERONTO JAZZ ORCHESTRA, a 17-piece Jazz Ensemble from Madison, WI.

“People relate to other people, events, history, and feelings through music. In many ways, Jazz music represents America's contribution to the evolution of music. As an educator, I truly believe that I have a responsibility to try and pay tribute to the performers that inspired me when I was growing up.  In turn, my own students will hopefully find some interest in a particular style of this music and strive to achieve a level of performance that one day exceeds my, and even their own expectations," said Jon Schipper, Director of Bands at Madison Country Day School.

The goal of this event is to celebrate Jazz music utilizing the talents our local Madison musicians and educators.

"The Madison area has always offered a rich environment of diverse music and art, and the general public needs to be reminded of this through regular performances. It is these performances involving some of Madison's finest community performers that can reach out to young students in order to create synergy in a musical sense."

The Jeff Peronto Jazz Orchestra (JPJO) has been entertaining audiences since 2008, but it's conductor has been a staple of organized Jazz in Madison, WI for over 35 years.  Since 1972, Jeff Peronto has helped to cultivate the careers of some of Madison's most well-known musicians, some of which who have gone on to tour and perform with legendary groups such as The Buddy Rich Big Band, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson, Stan Kenton, and many, many others.  The members of Jeff's many bands over the years come from different backgrounds and each brings a unique component to the overall ensemble. Undoubtedly, these performers and their conductor all share a common belief: to provide entertaining music to local audiences in order to inspire, motivate others, while paying tribute to the musicians who have similarly touched our lives. The JPJO will be playing selections from the library of the Buddy Rich Big Band, Count Basie Orchestra, Horace Silver, Don Menza, and many others.  The band will be hosting some special surprise guests specifically for this concert.

This performance offers FREE ADMISSION, with a suggested donation.  Doors will open at 6PM, and seating is first come, first serve.  Reception to follow performance.  This event is supported by grants from the MCDS Parent Guild and The Madison Jazz Society.

Jon Schipper has been the Director of Bands at Madison Country Day School since 2008.  He also teaches the Jazz improvisation and Jazz big band courses at Madison Memorial High School, and serves as the Musical Director for the Jeff Peronto Jazz Orchestra.  Jon has been a clinician for various Jazz groups, marching bands, and drum corps in the USA and Great Britain.  Jon has been fortunate in his life to have played with these legendary performers:  Frank Sinatra Jr, The Temptations, Members of Sly and The Family Stone, Ed Shaughnessy, and others.  Jon is actively involved with Madison musical groups such as Madisalsa, Phat Phunktion, The UW-Madison Big Band, The Madison Scouts, and The Tim Whalen Nonet.
